
Because of the Commission's success with cultural and historical facilities, the General Assembly in 1996 asked the Commission to begin working with local governments to provide for the construction of publicly-owned major and minor league professional sports facilities. Since that time, the Commission's statute has been amended twice to include motorsports and professional tennis in the types of sports facilities eligible to receive state funding through the Commission.
